A cat that wears many hats, Ghanaian-Burkinabe Ria Boss is most well known for being a powerhouse musician, songwriter and enthralling performer. With soulful and dreamy vocal tones, she is a reflection of All her neo-soul, jazz and R&B influences.
‘Cat Mama’, as she is affectionately nicknamed, finds her musical roots in the inspiring harmonies of Baptist spirituals and MoTown cuts. In the neo-soul influences of D'Angelo and Erykah Badu. In the careful songwriting of Nina Simone and Lauryn Hill. In the vocal depth and power of Jill Scott and Ella Fitzgerald and in the heat and rhythm of her hometown. After gaining popularity from releasing Soundcloud classics like the Juls produced “Right, Left” (2015) and her cult classic “LUHYASOGOOD” (2015) produced by Kuvie, Boss made her bold entry into the Ghanaian alternative music space with her debut EP, “Find Your Free”(2017) - an EP that broached heavy topics like suicide, depression, self confidence and empowering women. After that impressive entrance, Boss went on to undertake her “THANKGODITSRIA” run in 2018. This saw her release an EP every week for 11 weeks, with breakout songs “Equal” and fan favourite “Holding Hands in Public”.
in 2022 Ria Boss released her debut live album, “REMEMBER”, an album, that was released in the aftermath of her grandmother’s death and a deep dive into her relationship to grief, child loss and heartbreak. Recorded completely live alongside Ghanaian band The Musical Lunatics. The album was received to critical acclaim, and ranked the number 1 R&B Album of 2022 by Native Magazine. Boss was also one of the key Ghanaian creatives chosen to meet with VP Kamala Harris at Vibrate Space and her song, "Call Up" was featured on the official playlist of VP Harris visit.
Boss also spends time unraveling her ideas in more mediums than just music, delving into visual art with her paintings and unpacking her music into immersive experiences like her headline show Cat Mama World, that has grown popular for her blend of musical theatre, concert and art exhibition. She is an artist that strongly believes in the power of creative collaboration and is also known for her multi-disciplinary approach to her performances.
In addition, Boss also hosts her own online radio show “Cat Mama World” on Oroko Radio, she works as creative programs lead for Black Girls Glow (an organisation that aims at fostering collaboration between women creatives), she is also well known for moderating/facilitating workshops and masterclasses around live performance and songwriting AND is the co-founder of #RiaBossOpenMic an open mic and live music showcase platform whose main goal is to foster creative communities and artistic expression in Ghana.
She is currently based in her hometown, Accra.
